Project Lazarus cited in opening lines of White House 2013 Drug Control Strategy

We are proud to be included in the Preface of the 2013 National Drug Control Strategy by ONDCP Director Gil Kerlikowske.

The 2013 Strategy also includes an enhanced focus on overdose prevention and intervention as an important component in reducing drug-related deaths and connecting those in need with treatment and recovery services. In August 2012, I traveled to Wilkes County, North Carolina, and visited Project Lazarus, an organization helping to address the prescription drug abuse problem in a region hard hit by the epidemic. While there, I met with doctors, community leaders, and law enforcement professionals dedicated to reducing prescription drug abuseā€”to include preventing drug-related deaths through the use of the life-saving overdose reversal drug naloxone. As a result, the 2013 Strategy includes a section on overdose and highlights a law enforcement professional who is pioneering the use of naloxone by police officers in his hometown of Quincy, Massachusetts.
